Research Interests:

     The research in Dr. Chang’s laboratory is focused on the pathogensis of the fungal pathogen Sporisorium scitamineum which causes sugarcane smut disease.The life cycle of S. scitamineum is divided into three stages based on cell morphology and lifestyle, the yeast cell-like haploid sporidium, the dikaryotic hypha and the teliospore. Yeast-like sporidium is haploid cell, non-pathogenic and grows by budding. Two compatible sporidia develop infectious dikaryotic hyphae through sexual mating. Dikaryotic hypha grows along with sugarcane bud meristem and eventually forms the appressorium on the inner scales of the young buds. Chang’s laboratory is principally concerned with two aspects of this fungus: I. How the opposite mating types sporidia recognize each other and initiate sexual mating to develop dikaryotic hypha. II. The biochemistry and molecular biology of environmental sensing and response of the fungus. All of these phenomena are of importance in pathogenesis. Chang’s lab welcomes diverse types of research collaborations and is interested in recruiting ambitious and highly motivated postdoctoral research associates and postgraduate students to join team.
